I agree the POI's here for speed and red light cameras are good. My friend pays $40+ per year for a subscription via the Garmin site and I showed him a few POI's that the other site didn't already have on its database so the bottom line is that the POI's here are often more accurate and comprehensive than the other pay/subscription sites.
Home›Garmin Support›Garmin Auto Forum (Garmin Nuvi, Garmin Drive Forum)My Nuvi had 'Press black dot' syndrome last week. I was lost (in every sense of the word!!). I am the most useless person at finding my way about, and also with anything technical and 'computery! I eventually found this site, put in the details and an AMAZINGLY helpful person told me to use a stylus, be precise and touch the dot six times and all would be well. He/she was right, Nuvi screen came back to normal. Oh, Boy! was I happy. Ecstatic, that was me. However, when I came to use it on Friday, it was telling me that it had lost all it's map data. OMG! Depressed doesn't even BEGIN to describe me - distraught, more like it!!!
Is there anyone out there that could spare me a few minutes and outline in VERY SIMPLE terms what I need to do (get a chauffeur, yes, I know!!! )
Sorry to be a nuisance folks, but I SO need some help with this. I really am the stereotypical 'dumb blonde' with this sort of stuff though, so please, oh please keep it simple
Hoping someone will take pity on me again!
Thank you,
Jilly

- Well unless you've done something it can't simply 'lose' your map data.
Have you updated software? Maps?
If not then go to Tools>Settings>Map>Map info and see what is listed there. If maps are listed there are they selected? (tick mark in the box) - Hi!
I think you're the person that was so helpful last week - I'm sure I recognise your name! If so, thank you for getting involved again today, and for your swift reply.
I've done absolutely nothing other than get rid of the black dot by touching it six times. I wouldn't have any idea how to download maps or do anything remotely intelligent, other than just use it as it is, for navigation.
When I turn it on, the word 'GARMIN' appears, then the warning about not operating it whilst driving, then the wording 'Can't Unlock Maps' comes up, with an 'OK' box underneath. If I touch 'OK' then 'no detailed maps that support routing' appears. If I press my 'favourites' then it just says 'No Map Data Available'.
Whatever have I done? More importantly, whatever can I do??
Thank you again for getting involved with someone who obviously is completely 'plank-like'!!
Regards,
Jilly - Do what I posted above
Post what you see when you do.
Also:
How long have you had your 1300? Have you ever updated the maps? - Hi again!
Apologies for the delay - why does my phone keep ringing when I least want to answer it?? :x
My Garmin was a present 18 months ago.
I've done what you suggested and this is what happens:
I press Tools>Settings>Map and after 'Map' I get four boxes on screen - Map Detail (set at Nomal), Map View (set at 3-D), Vehicle (with the option 'Change'), and Trip Log (set at Hide).
Along the very bottom of the screen are the words 'Info' and 'Restore'. If I touch 'Info' which is what I think you suggest, a totally blank screen appears.
The screen is staying blank. When I did this a few minutes ago it did state that it was searching for satellites, but this time it's staying blank. Bit like me!! lol
Any ideas much appreciated. Perhaps it's shrugged off it's mortal coil, and will have to be buried. What do you think? - Well that would appear to indicate no maps
I assume you don't have lifetime maps? If not then unless you backed up all your files when you got the 1300 (?) then it's either a case of burying it or buying a new one. You could buy just maps but really your money would be better spent buying a newer device.
The only other suggestion is that in one of your posts you say you had the same problem and a hard reset cured it? You might wish to try that again.
If it works this time and your maps are now visible then it sounds like an issue deep inside the nuvi's operating system, in which case it's likely to keep occurring. So burying or a new one would still apply :) - Hi,
Thank you again for your help! I've had a friend fiddle with my satnav in the hope that maybe he'd find the trouble, but it's still saying 'no map data', so it does look like you're right, and it's not going to revive any time soon!
I feel like getting the same one again, it was so user friendly, but also feel that for it to lose it's maps for no reason, and at only 18months old, is a bad fault. So why should I spend more money with the company?!
I'll take a look around and ask a few friends what they recommend. In the meantime I do have the one that's actually fitted in my car, the second one was just for backup, as you know!!
Thank you again for your help on both occasions!!
Happy driving!
Jilly - I think you had a rogue device. I have a 1310 and 1490, both about 3 years old and with no issues since I bought them. There are some very good deals around on the 13xx series now so if you liked it I'd get another one.
I certainly would get another 13xx or 14xx series GPS if either of mine failed  - Hi!
I've never had a PM before, so it's taken me a little while to find out how to get back to you!
You obviously contacted me that way because you included your address. Your offer is so kind! I really do appreciate it, and would love to take advantage of it!
I'll nip to the Post Office tomorrow and get a bag, and will post it off to you. I'm very interested to see what you make of it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the problem isn't something I've done. As I've explained before, I'm useless with all things technical!!
Thank you again for your kindness, you'll be receiving the thing as fast as Mr. Postie can get it to you!!
Huge thanks,
Jilly - Hi Jon,
Just to say that the Satnav is winging its way to you as I write this. I'll be sooooo embarrassed if you press a button and it all comes back to life!! Embarrassed, but pleased!
Looking forward to hearing your diagnosis!
Kindest regards,
Jilly - Sent you a PM. Your GPS arrived this morning and is all fixed, it was just missing the map unlock code. Have explained more in the PM.
- Hi Jon!
That's absolutely fantastic! I'm amazed, thank you so much!! I've tried to forward you details, but it seems I'm not 'enabled' to send private messages. So, if you can bear with me, I'll find out how to do that and get in touch with you that way.
Still totally amazed that it was possible! So this code you mention, that's needed, where will I find that? Doh!!
Will find out about the PM and come back to you.
Huge thanks, much admiration!!
Jilly - PMs aren't generally available, but I've included contact details in the PM sent to you
- Jon,
I can't seem to get back into Private Messages! How do I do it, it was a fluke when I did it earlier, and I can't do it again!
Ohhhh, can I get any worse?!!!
Jilly - Should be able to read my PM by going into the link towards the top of this page that says 'You have no new messages'.
- If one buys a separate SD card for use in the Garmin Nuvi 255W to hold the larger current map files download instead of buying the special Garmin $79 SD Card, what should the SD card be named when seeing both the Garmin and the SD card on a computer desktop when making the transfer? Thanks.
- I don't think it requires any special name. It just needs to be formatted FAT32 which most SD cards will be already. In order to tell the card from the Nuvi I will name my cards by their maker and size. Sandisk8 for a Sandisk 8GB card as an example.
Nice work, buddy...you and others here are what makes this forum so valuable to both newbies and experts alike. :)Your GPS arrived this morning and is all fixed, it was just missing the map unlock code.

Upload OSM on my garmin Nuvi
Let see who can help me out. I have a Garmin Nuvi 30, I used to use it for my car but as I am going to take a trip around Europe for about 6 month and I will visit about 7 countries. My GPS recently stop working, suddenly after I parked my car and turn off the engine for a few minutes when I turn it on again it said to press the dot to calibrate the GPS, after a while I when back home and check on the internet for the answer, after I find out how to calibrate, I find out I didn't have any maps on my unit, apparently I need to buy the maps from Garmin in order to have the maps again on my GPS. So looking around I found several pages including this one. One of these pages was trying to help me to upload the maps but was not successfully, we don't understand what it happen, every time I download a zip file but after I unzip it I get another zip file. In another site somebody recommend me to put this second zip file in a sd card and directly put it on my GPS that the unit will recognize the file and that it, but not, I haven't been able to upload any maps on my unit. Somebody could help me out to find out what is the problem? thanks.

Re: Upload OSM on my garmin Nuvi
Which website did you download the map from, and what is the file name?
I suggest using this website: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

First pick a country, then it will give you a link to download. You need to download the file 'osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip'.
So save that, and unzip it to get a file named gmapsupp.img. That file is the map in Garmin IMG format, though depending on how your computer is setup it might be shown as a zip file (or as a disc image).
Then copy this gmapsupp.img file onto the SD card, in a directory named 'Garmin' (some Nuvi models need the img file in a directory named 'Map', I'm not sure if that applies to yours).
Then put the SD card in your Nuvi, and it should be able to use the maps. You might need to select them, by going into preferences and maps.

Re: Upload OSM on my garmin Nuvi
Hi Alba, let see if you could help me out, I have been for hours to figure it on many forums and nothing. Firstable, yes that is the page I got the maps, I also choose Routable Bicycle (Openfietsmap Lite) and Spain as I am departure from here, then I download this file: openfietsmap_lite_gmapsupp.zip and yes after I unzip this file I get another zip file gmapsupp, I copy this one into the sd card, where I have a folder name 'Garmin' but when I unplugged th gps and turn in on it said that 'impossible unblock maps' 'there is no maps on the unit'
This happen after one day I used the gps and park my car, and later after I turning on again, a white screen with a dot came on, asking me to recalibrate the screen, after I did it, that messages will show up. It is like there is missing something to read the maps. I try to contact Garmin, but I have not receive any answer yet, plus if I download free maps that would them make them so happy.
If you could help me out would be great, I am getting crazy here. I have a trip coming next month and I am about to give up on the gps and do the old fashion way.
Thanks for your time, Adrian

Re: Upload OSM on my garmin Nuvi
It seems that the Nuvi 30 needs the maps in a folder named 'Map', not 'Garmin'. So trying creating a folder named 'Map' on the SD card, then put the gmapsupp.img file in that.
Though it does sound like the firmware on you Nuvi is messed up somehow. You could try updating or reloading the firmware, use Garmin MyDashboard: https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/dashboard.htm
You could also try a master reset, instructions here: http://support.garmin.com/support/searc … 000000000}
Or see this page for fixing problems with the Nuvi booting up: http://support.garmin.com/support/searc … 000000000}
